Riikka Hyvönen & Rakel Liekki

Riikka Hyvönen & Rakel Liekki : Ylisöpö!

Rakel Liekki (b.1979) is a visual artist. At the tender age of four she told her parents she will be a painter. She moved away from home to study arts at fifteen and graduated in 2001 with painting as her major, though she has focused on conceptual and performance art.

Liekki believes that the most important task for an artist is to interact within the society. Her goal is to be a part of making the world a better place. She is not afraid of being political or ashamed of being naive, therefore her work often views the world through either black and white or ridiculously pink glasses.

Being a feminist that sides with the small and silent, Rakel’s mission is to stand up for those who cannot defend themselves. Never inclined to play it safe and neutral and fearlessly standing her ground has earned Rakel both a following of die-hard fans as well as her fair share death threads.

Rakel often plays with the boundaries of art and popular culture as well as the boundaries between artist and art. Pornography has been an essential theme for her. It has been explored and experienced, both through study and working within the industry. Her study of objectification of the artist in a piece of art has consequently instated her place as the most famous porn star in Finland. Liekki has collaborated with Mikko Hynninen and Antti Hietala in processing her partly imaginary character in Fantasy #1 for a porn star performance, which was played in Theatre. Now festival in Kiasma 2006.
In addition to her work as an artist, Rakel is also a journalist. In her spare time she campaigns for animal rights and enjoys the beautiful, calm aspects of life. With this exhibition she returns using painting as her main medium.

Riikka Hyvönen (b.1982) is a painter. She grew up in Lapland. Even though Lapland had a huge influence on her she felt the urge to see more and moved to Italy in order to start her studies in visual arts. However it took her years until she had the opportunity to work in arts full time. Instead she worked in various different countries such as U.K., Ireland and the Channel Islands in various different positions as a stylist, make-up artist and hair stylist. She has done adverts, TV and worked with the likes of HIM. Her broad experience in the visual and media field eventually brought her back to arts. Now for the last few years she has studied arts and worked as an assistant for an artist.

In her own work Riikka refuses to play by the rules and give up on cuteness. She is not afraid of being childish or ridiculous. Her paintings often play with themes of femininity and childhood. When it comes to arts she trusts her intuition. Her goal is to maintain a genuine enthusiasm and avoid pretentiousness of all kind. Therefore it is natural that her first major solo show tackles cuteness.
