ÜBER CUTE!

Cuteness is a feministic act. Girls grow up surrounded by cuteness but have to give it up as adults if they don’t want to lose their credibility.

Cuteness is often used as a demeaning and paternalistic adjective that refers especially to feminine innocence or lack of experience. Also in the art world credibility is often created out of negativity. Openly positive and feminine themes are viewed lesser than angst-ridden and manly themes.

Cuteness itself is neutral. Images, concepts and styles are neutral. They get their connotations when used in different contexts. We painted ÜBER CUTE! because we found no rational explanation why cuteness would correlate with persons intelligence or significance of an painting. We aimed to reveal a new perspective on cuteness.

We created decorative detailed images inspired by colouring books, illustrations and animations from our childhood. We painted what we loved as kids. Now as adults we are still attracted to same themes but also simultaneously feel ashamed of the attraction. We painted the forbidden with forbidden means.

We created the paintings based on carefree and pointless images from colouring books. Therefore we have given visitors of ÜBER CUTE! exhibition a chance to colour their own depiction of cuteness. Their versions of our paintings can be found from our art blog.
